Task 1
Which method do you think is best for freshmen to know the campus better?
1. ask sophomores to become partners with freshmen
2. give freshmen a campus tour
3. establish a service center for answering questions from freshmen
分析:本题为三选一题型。

Sample
For me, the best way freshmen can get to know the campus better is to introduce to them a sophomore partner because a sophomore partner can think from students’ perspective. I mean that they can offer unique and valuable insight to freshmen. Let’s say, I, as a freshman, want to know which are the noisier dorms, which are the quietest, which student cafeteria would he recommend. These things are stuff that I could not possible get to know from people other than an older student. So, I think that to have a sophomore partner is best for students to know the new campus.

Task 2
If you have a job interview with a company far from where you live, do you prefer a phone interview or a face-to-face interview?
分析:本题为preference题。

Sample
For me, I prefer to have a face-to-face interview because I can show more to the interviewer about myself. When we see each other in person, I can use eyes contacts and facial expressions to express my ideas. Say, I can smile to indicate that I am happy with the topic and willing to continue. Or I can look seriously in the eyes of the interviewer to express that I really mean what I mean and I put a lot value on it. Basically, through face to face communication, I can give more than if I am just speaking on the phone.

Sometimes we are assigned to work in a group on a project. The group will be helped more by a person who will be willing to do what other group members want than by a person who often strongly insists that things should be done in a way that is different from what the group wants to do.

In university, students usually need to join a group with others to complete a certain project. In this situation, some people think that if the students have the freedom to choose whoever they want to work with, it helps the completion of the project since they like each other and can work well together. However, I believe that it would be more effective when they join a group with those who have different ways of thinking or doing things.

The differences between group members contribute more to a successful project. Of course, if students are free to choose the person they want, they might work on well with each other and the project may therefore be finished with everyone involved delightful and happy. But the snag in this is that one student wants a specific fellow student to join him maybe just because they are friends or because he thinks the other is stronger in abilities. Either way, their group work will suffer a lack of diversity in thoughts. This will detract from the quality of the project. In contrast, when the student is working with people different from themselves or new in ways to do things, this teammate will offer many valuable things for the project. He is able to bring in fresh perspectives so that the project is more convincing, to raise up potential problems that otherwise would remain unnoticed to make the group work cover more issues, and to come up with different solutions to problems and then enable the team to figure out the best and the most efficient one. All this adding up leads to a project of higher quality. Take my own experience as an example. Last semester, my management professor asked us make a presentation about the management system of MacDonald. To complete this project, I worked with my classmate Richard. While I quite favored the MacDonald’s style, he did not approve of it. He had planned to distribute questionnaires and collect related data, but I preferred to refer to relevant previous literatures on MacDonald’s. So you see that we had distinct ideas and we did not really agree on our ways of doing research. In our presentation, we considered both the strengths and weaknesses of the management of MacDonald’s, and after discussion, we found out that it would be much more efficient and practical to read past studies and findings. The result is that our presentation got high recognition from our professor. However, my other classmates’ presentation did not get a very good result, because they either chose to work with their friends or join together with more excellent partners. This experience told me that to have a partner different from yourself can yield a much better outcome.

It is true that the differences between teammates may cause disputes, affecting their work efficiency. However, this will not become a serious problem if people in a group learn to communicate with each other in a proper way. Because of all mentioned above, I think that it is much more advisable to have a teammate who has a different mindset.
